Joseph Henri Mizell was born in France and immigrated to America in the 1780s before the French Revolution.  He settled near Charleston, South Carolina, and has many descendants. 

French Origins

Joseph Henri Mizell is descended from French/German people living in the Moselle River valley in northeastern France.  Henry Measels is found in the 1790 Census for St. George Parish at Dorchester County, South Carolina.  In his household, the census records three males over age 16, one male under age 16, and two females.  St. Georges Parish is about 25 miles northwest from Charleston and was established in the late 1600s.

Joseph Henri immigrated to America perhaps in the 1780s to escape Protestant persecutions in France in the days leading up to the French Revolution in 1789.  He likely arrived at Charleston, and would have been in his 60s at the time.  He brought a wife and seven children with him.  It does not appear that he knew any of the Mizells already in America.
